Soapstone Questions

Does Soapstone need to be sealed?

No, Soapstone is a non-porous material that a sealer will not penetrate. With its naturally antibiotic and antimicrobial traits, it makes for an excellent countertop material.

Does Soapstone Scratch?

All soapstone is soft, between 1-4.5 mols, so yes it will scratch. Softer soapstones will scratch with a finger nail while the "harder" ones will take a key or knife to scratch.

Can scratches be repaired?

Soapstone can be repaired easily by the home owner with some sandpaper and a little water. Depending on the finish it will either be a 120 or 220 sandpaper.

Does soapstone have to be oiled or waxed?

No, the oil or wax is to speed up the patina process of the soapstone. However, the stone will darken naturally quicker in prep areas and anywhere oils can "splash" onto the countertop.

Is soapstone good for outdoor use?

Yes, Soapstone is excellent for outdoor use because of its inert properties, as well as being naturally antibiotic and antimicrobial. A matte finish with no resin on the surface ensures it will last the test of time.

Is there Such a thing as white soapstone?

No, a white soapstone is a mis-named material, usually a marble or a quartzite. True white soapstone would fall apart in your hands.

Is Noire, Marine Black, and India Black Soapstone actually soapstone?

No, these are all the same material with a different name. While they can be treated with oil or wax to enhance the colors, it is actually a phyllite. A phyllite is a very dense slate that does not shear. It is a nice countertop material we carry, but refuse to sell it labeled as soapstone like some of our competition.

Natural Stone isn’t man-made. It is quarried from the earth and cut into slabs. Granite, marble, limestone, travertine, and quartzite are examples of natural stone.
